Ione Tribal Government
There are 565 federally recognized tribal nations in the United States, 115 of them here in California. Each nation is a separate, independent, sovereign entity with its own government entrusted to observe the laws of its constitution and manage the day-to-day affairs of the tribe.

Once trust land is secured, like any city or county government, our Tribal Council will oversee the development of tribal lands, social and healthcare services, educational and employment opportunities, and public safety services including law enforcement, fire and emergency medical services. The Council presently makes decisions regarding economic development strategies, legislative and other issues affecting the future direction of our Tribe.

Our Tribal Council is comprised of five members, each of whom is elected to three-year terms by the general council. Our Council consists of a Chairperson, Vice Chairperson, Secretary, Treasurer and Member at Large.

Tribal Mission Statement

We are committed to developing a foundation for the preservation of cultural traditions and history, protecting and caring for our environment by exercising our sovereignty to the fullest extent; to ensuring the social, cultural and economic stability and prosperity of our people by developing and optimizing tribal and community resources and opportunities; to ensuring the protection and care of our tribal youth and our families, including the establishment of educational and developmental programs in securing a brighter future for coming generations; to upholding the Constitution of the Ione Band of Miwok Indians and protecting the rights of our Tribe, including the basic rights of every individual in our tribal community; and to ensure the fair and equitable provisions of services and entitlements to all tribal members.

We will preserve, protect and defend the rights of all members of the Ione Band of Miwok Indians, while establishing cooperative government-to-government relationships with those who recognize and respect the sovereignty of our Tribe. The Ione Band of Miwok Indians is committed to protecting and exercising our sovereign rights as a federally recognized Tribe to ensure the preservation of our cultural and historical integrity.
